Lost in time: 68-year-old letter finds its way home
DULUTH, MN. (KBJR) - A letter postmarked in April, 1953 is on its way to its originally-intended owners.
The letter arrived on the doorstep of Susan Nordin, a Morgan Park resident who moved to the area in October.
Nordin said she was going through her mail on December 21 when she saw an old envelope addressed to a Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nelson.
“It was postmarked Copenhagen, Denmark, and then I looked at it more closely and I saw that the date was 1953 and that blew me away, I said woah!” said Nordin.
Nordin quickly turned to the power of social media to find the intended recipients of the letter.
She said the post got a lot of attention on the Morgan Park Community Facebook page.
“There are a lot of people that have lived here a long time, and there’s a real sense of pride in this community, and so when I saw that and saw the collaboration that was going on it really lifted my heart,” said Nordin.
Community members rallied and found a family member of “The Nelsons” the letter was addressed to.
That family member referred her to Connie Anderholm, who was able to determine by the location and date that the letter was about the birth of her late brother, Jim.
“En route to Copenhagen, my mother went into premature labor and she delivered my brother,” said Anderholm.
The letter was addressed to her grandparents, the original owners of the house in Morgan Park.
Anderholm’s brother, Jim, passed away this past August.
She says the letter’s timely arrival has given her and her family a reason to celebrate the life of her brother.
“I spent two weekends a month up until he died, so we did a lot of visiting in the spring and the summer. I think he’d get a kick out of it. I know my dad would,” she said.
Anderholm expressed her gratitude for Nordin’s effort to find her.
“I think a lot of people would have just tossed the letter, but that was kind of fun that she wanted to check out to see if she could find somebody that would know the people on the letter,” said Anderholm.
Nordin is just grateful for the adventure
“I just think it’s beautiful that something as simple as a letter has so much power to connect, to connect the community here in Morgan Park, to connect a family, to connect me to history in this house, and I love this house,” she said.
Nordin mailed the letter to Anderholm on Tuesday.
It’s currently in the mail on its way to Ohio, where Anderholm lives.

Free Lunches
While the Duluth Public Schools paused free lunches for a couple weeks to get ready for the changes they needed to make once school resumed, Kelly and Patience decided to continue providing free lunches for the neighborhood. It started small and, as word spread, grew! We are so amazed by their generosity and hard work in making sure the members of the community don't go hungry!

Plant Giveaway
What originally started as a simple Tomato Plant Giveaway morphed into an amazing All-Kinds-Of-Plants Giveaway and Mask Giveaway!
With our partners: UMD, NAACP, and MP Community Garden Club, we were able to give out tomato plants, flower plants, seed packs, beet plants, bell pepper plants, strawberry plants, and so many other yummy vegetables to the neighbors of Morgan Park. We had an estimated 30-50 people attend and grab some free stuff to help provide some fresh food to this area.
It was also an opportunity for the Morgan Park Community Food Garden group to get the word out to neighbors that we are starting a food garden, hopefully on land in the area of Good Fellowship Center. We had a few people express interest in getting it up and running, and would love to also rent a plot in order to expand their own vegetable gardens.
We are still in need of volunteers to help build the garden beds, put up fencing, help with landscaping, and work with the Duluth Community Garden Program to help manage the garden. If you would like to help, or would like to rent a garden plot for Summer 2021, please email us at [email protected].

Winter Fun Fest
Winter Fun Fest was a great success! Neighbors came to enjoy activities together and have a little fun in this warm, winter day. We got to ice skate (though the ice was a little slushy), snowshoe (thanks to Parks and Rec for bringing snow shoes for everyone to try), ate food, played games, made slime, and got creative with Crafting supplies. It was so fun, we are already dreaming about it next year. 😊
Community Food Garden Update
**A team of people met again early February to discuss some thoughts on creating a Community Food Garden. We are still in need of interest expressed from the neighbors in Morgan Park. If you have any interest in helping get this amazing opportunity going, or have an interest in gardening once the community garden has been created, please email us to let us know. [email protected]
At this time, we are currently unsure of the timing as to when the community garden could be ready to use. Stay tuned.
**Thanks to those of you who came out to the community garden forum on November 16th. We had great speakers to talk to use about how their community food gardens are run and to answer our questions.
We are so close to finding a space for our community food garden and hope to begin building plots for gardens this spring! We could still use some valuable input from others in our neighborhood AND are looking for those who are interested in having a food garden plot.
To participate in the finishing touches of getting the garden up and running or if you are interested in having a food garden plot, please email us at [email protected] or you can join the FaceBook group, Morgan Park Community Garden Development.
